Rasulullah (Sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) told us about an effective medicine which can cure all diseases except death. It is narrated in as-Saheeh al-Bukhari on the authority of Abu Hurayrah radiyallahu anhu that Rasulullah (Sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said, "Use al-Habbah as-Sawdaa. It is indeed a remedy for all diseases except death."

Al-Habbah as-Sawdaa or Black Seed is also commonly known by its Hindi name, Kulanji. Other names include Black Cumin, Black Caraway Seed, Habbatul Barakah (the Seed of Blessings), and its botanical name "Nigella Sativa". Black Cumin is however a name for another spice as well.

The seed is even mentioned in previous scriptures. In the book of Isaiah in the Old Testament, Isaiah contrasts the reaping of ketsah with wheat (Isaiah 28: 25, 27). Ketsah is the Hebrew word for Nigella sativa.

The actual Nigella sativa plant reproduces with itself and forms a fruit capsule which consists of many white trigonal seeds. Once the fruit capsule has matured, it opens up and the seeds contained within are exposed to the air, becoming black in colour (black seeds).

All one has to do is to constantly use the seed, especially the oil which embraces all its benefits. Black Seed's chemical composition is very rich and diverse. Aside from its primary ingredient, crystalline nigellone, Black Seed contains 15 amino acids, proteins, carbohydrates, both fixed oils (84% fatty acids, including linolenic, and oleic), and volatile oils, alkaloids, saponin, and crude fibre, as well as minerals such as calcium, iron, sodium and potassium.

There are still many components in Black Seed that have not been identified. Research is going on around the world.

According to certain reports, the seed contains phosphates, iron and carbohydrate compounds together with antibiotics which are capable of killing germs. Chemical analysis of the grain also reveals carotene content. The liver converts carotene into Vitamin A, which is known for its anti-cancer properties. Other analyses reveal potent sexual hormones, stimulants, urine and bile diuretics, digestive enzymes, antacids, sedatives and other useful compounds.

It is also said that Black Seed activates the body's immune system, increasing resistance to disease. Its continuous use is extremely effective.

Use the oil with breakfast, lunch and supper for good health. A small quantity of oil mixed with honey is most effectual. The oil may also be used with boiled mint, orange juice or tea. A teaspoon of the oil before breakfast gives one energy for the rest of the day. A teaspoon after supper facilitates a restful sleep.

The Black Seed Oil should be one's permanent health remedy. Rasulullah (Sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) told us that it is a cure for all disease. His knowledge was gained from Allah. The effectiveness of Black Seed depends on the user's conviction on the words of Rasulullah (Sallallahu alayhi wa sallam). Also, one should consult a practitioner for specific applications and benefits.

We ask Allah to give us true appreciation of the words of Rasulullah (Sallallahu alayhi wa sallam).
