Laudium/Lenasia Sun - smoking
Attention: Presha Reddy
Greetings to you
We thank your reader for his concern towards the Deen (faith).
The announcement referred to by the reader was issued on the 10/5/2010 as an advisory and was been subsequently clarified in several public announcements from 16/5/2010 to one a few days ago. As your correspondent appears to be oblivious of these, we forward links below.

The issue was also extensively aired on community radio stations and with discussion groups.
There is no Divine explicit text by way of a verse in the Noble Quran on cigarette smoking or a narration of the Prophet Muhammed (Peace be upon him) saying clearly cigarette smoking is forbidden. Therefore Muslim jurists based on the information attached have ruled it to either Makruh (detested or undesirable) or Haraam (forbidden).
Until and unless the mainstream Ulama of our country issue unequivocal and categoric ruling of cigarette smoking as Haraam to our Theological Council, SANHA cannot pass judgment or pronouncements on the stocking of cigarettes by traders. We can only but advise people to assist them in making decisions in keeping with their individual accountability to the Creator and continue our campaign of encouraging people to stop smoking. We hope your publication will support this as well.
We also extend an open invitation to the reader to meet with us if he requires any further details.Kind regards
