Along with sufficient sleep, washing hands, eating fruit and veg, experts recommend the following herbs and oil to treat and prevent colds.

Echinacea - Can reduce chances of catching a cold by 60%. When taken with Vitamin C it can reduce it to 85%. If you already sick Echinacea can reduce the duration by 1? days. Use 250-500mg 3 times daily at the first sign of cold and during cold.

Vitamin C - Most high risk groups ? asthmatics, diabetics, smokers, pregnant women, babies and the elderly ? have been reported to have lower Vitamin C status and/or greater need. It is advisable to eat Vitamin C rich fruits in combination with the intake of higher doses of the vitamin. Individual requirements vary widely and an attempt should be made by each person to establish the dosage regimen best suited to his requirements.

Vitamin E - A study   of 617 nursing home patients published in the Journal of American Medical Association, showed that those who took a daily vitamin E supplement (200 IU) for one year were 20% less likely to catch a cold than those who didn?t.  Vitamin E is obtainable from dark green leafy vegetables, almonds and wheat germ.

Vitamin A - To optimise immune function, high doses of vitamin A (up to 50,000 IU) can be used for short-term (up to 2 weeks), even in children, to fight acute infections and viral disease.

Probiotics - Help prevent infections in the intestines. There is evidence that they might prevent colds as well.

Zinc  - The immune system depends on zinc to function properly.

Garlic - Garlic has antibiotic, antioxidant, antimicrobial, expectorant, immune-stimulant and decongestant properties. Garlic possibly reduces risk of getting an upper respiratory infection such as cold and flu.

Elderberry  - By lessening congestion and possibly increasing perspiration, elderberry may help reduce the symptoms of colds and flu. Pregnant and breast-feeding women should not consume this.

Astragalus ? helps fight colds, particularly respiratory infections and strengthens the immune system. Its often taken as a liquid extract and added to soups and teas. Use 15-30 drops up to thrice daily during winter.
