One of South Africa?s most treasured indigenous healing plants, Sutherlandia, or Cancer Bush, is an ancient Cape remedy recorded centuries ago as a valuable treatment for many ailments, including cancer ? hence its name. The ancient San and Khoi used it for many treatments, the veracity of which modern science is only now proving.
 
Plantations of Cancer Bush for the pharmaceutical industry are now well established, particularly in the Cape. Further areas are being earmarked for setting up more plantations in the future.
 
Cancer Bush is usually made into decoctions or teas ? take ? cup fresh leaves and flowers, pour one cup of boiling water over them and let the mixture stand for 5 minutes. Then strain it and sip it slowly. Traditionally ? - ? of a cup was taken 2-3 times a day for coughs, colds , flu, fevers, bronchitis, asthma, pleurisy, poor appetite, peptic ulcers, chicken pox, indigestion, stomach and kidney ailments, varicose veins and haemorrhoids, urinary tract ailments, liver ailments, arthritis, gout, rheumatism, diabetes, gastric ailments, backache, flatulence, sour belching,  dysentery,  heart ailments, circulation ailments, rheumatoid arthritis, stress, anxiety, depression, fear, phobias, cystitis, sleeplessness, nightmares and cancer treatments and prevention especially breast, pancreatic and prostrate cancer.
 
A warmed poultice of fresh sprigs was an ancient remedy for backache, stiff neck and muscle spasms. The early Cape colonists made a rub by heating fresh sprigs of cancer bush in mutton fat and then massaging it into the muscles. It quickly relaxed and soothed the painful area. Because there are a great number of active compounds within the leaves, flowers and stalks of the cancer bush, including valuable amino aids, antivirals and pinitol, which is an important antidiabetic compound, Cancer Bush could even be considered in the treatment of AIDS and severe wasting illness. It is now listed as an immune booster, an anti-inflammatory medication, an excellent antibacterial and an analgesic. 
 
Recipe for Cancer Bush Cream
Today we can make our own creams for varicose veins, haemorrhoids, painful feet etc using only pure paraben- and petrochemical-free aqueous cream. Heat one cup in a double boiler with a cup of fresh cancer bush sprigs and leaves. Simmer it gently for 20 minutes, giving it a frequent good stir to really get the precious components out of the leaves. Then strain the leaves out with a sieve and add 2 teaspoons of Vitamin E Oil and 2 teaspoons of almond oil. Pour into sterilised jars with tight-fitting screw on lids and store in a cool place.
 
Warning
Cancer Bush is contraindicated during pregnancy. Always consult a doctor before starting home treatment.
