PRESS STATEMENT - Grand fraud on Halaal meat Print
Presented with credible evidence by the legal counsel representing the South African Meat Industry Company (SAMIC) and the Red Meat Industry Forum SA of massive fraud being committed against the people of the Republic of South Africa, the Halaal industry and the Muslim community, SANHA immediately resolved to join in the urgent application to stop the perpetrator?s despicable actions and bring them to book.

Acting on privileged information they unearthed evidence of an importer/distributor carrying out the following fraudulent activities;

1.      Importation of Irish and Belgian pork products and re-labelling them as Halaal sheep/veal products.

2.      Importation of Australian Kangaroo meat and re-labelling it as Halaal beef trimmings.

3.      Importation of Canadian dairy powder for animal feed and re-labelling it as Halaal skim milk powder.

4.       Importation of non Halaal Spanish poultry products and re-labelling them as Halaal.

A range of very urgent actions beginning with an immediate application for search and seizure at the perpetrators premises and thereafter it is envisaged that it will progress to criminal charges. The order for search and seizure was granted in the courts in the favour of the applicants which resulted in the premises of the Orion Cold Storage company in Cape Town being examined by the authorities yesterday and the matter proceeds for an interim interdict to the High court of the Western Cape on the 10th November, 2011.

SANHA will examine the documentary evidence seized to determine the extent to which these heinous acts of fraud had infiltrated the supply chain. It will also examine the basis of their claim of Halaal assurance and the abuse of the Halaal certification of local and international organisations. SANHA views the illegal and immoral activities of this group as highly reprehensible, offensive, indefensible and an assault on the religious and constitutional rights of Muslims and fellow South Africans that cannot go unpunished and appropriate relief is being sought accordingly.

Thanking you.

Yours sincerely

For South African National Halaal Authority
