Subject: PORK PRODUCTS MARKED AS HALAAL

Sir,

We acknowledge receipt of your reply of 8th August, 2012 in the above matter, contents of which have been noted.

However, we are unable to bring closure in the matter as there are several points that still require clarification which we list below;

1.  Your opening paragraph states, "further to the urgent announcement." What announcement are you referring to as we have not had sight of this from Mighty Meats?

2.  You aver that "an apology to the Muslim community has been published and continues to be circulated."
May we ask you to produce the apology from your establishment to the Muslim community and details of the circulation.

3.  In your response you stated that ONLY 25 units were produced and supplied to four outlets, and that there were no current stocks on the shelves of any of the outlets.

(i) Please confirm names of the outlets and the quantity/ies supplied to enable us to audit and reconcile.
(ii) kindly supply proof of upliftment of the '25 units'.

4.  We note your assertion that Mighty Meats do not use any pork nor has same on the premises.  Please notify us as to what meats you use and the source/s, brand names etc. of same.

5.  What quantity of the incorrect packaging was produced and by whom?  Do you have a destruction certificate for the quantity destroyed?

6.  You have not supplied any details of your Halaal program to help us verify the facts directly. Do you have a full-time onsite Muslim supervisor/s, their names, how long have they been employed by yourselves etc.? Does their responsibility cover approving and signing off Halaal packaging? Did they pick up this discrepancy? Will they attest to witnessing uplifting of the stocks from the four outlets and also to the destruction of the 'labels'/packaging?

We look forward to your immediate response to enable us to bring closure to this unfortunate matter and be able to give the necessary assurance to our constituency.

We await your response.

Dear Mr EBI Lockhat,

Further to the urgent announcement:-

1. The background to this unfortunate incident is that an incorrect label was printed by the printer and utilised in production.  The label should have read ?NO PORK.?  When the labels were delivered, we immediately realised the problem and the labels were rejected.  Unfortunately, a small number of these labels were installed in the packaging machine and this was utilised when 25 units of the French Polony were manufactured and dispatched to four different outlets.

2. All products with the incorrect labelling have been recalled off the shelves.

3. All the incorrect labels have been destroyed.

4. An apology to the Muslim community has been published and continues to be circularised.

5. 25 units of the French Polony 2kg was manufactured and dispatched to four different outlets.  There are no current stocks of the French Polony 2kg on the shelves of any outlets.

6. Mighty Meats does not use and has never used pork in any of its products.  There is no pork on the premises of Mighty Meats.

7. Mighty Meats assures the community that its products are 100% Halaal and do not contain any pork.

8. Any error of this nature will not occur again due to the fact that there is no longer any incorrect packaging on the premises.

9. We apologise sincerely for the inconvenience caused by this error.

Yours sincerely,
Kasmir Morgan

Subject: PORK PRODUCTS MARKED AS HALAAL

Sir,

Re : PORK PRODUCTS MARKED AS HALAAL

We have received several complaints on our National Consumer line regarding the use of pork ingredients in your French Polony product under the brand name Mighty Meats. Photographic evidence and a sample of the product has been sent to our offices.

Pork and any use thereof is strictly forbidden (Haraam) in terms of Islamic law and is never condoned or tolerated in any form. Your use of it and listing same is abhorrent, deeply offensive and repulsive to say the least.

To further add insult to injury you have chosen to append a Halaal certification mark on the product, authentication of which we must question since no Halaal certifier, scholar or Theologian would ever give a ruling of making pork as Halaal.

In light of this very serious offence against the Muslim community and affront to our dignity we request with extreme urgency the following;

1.       An immediate recall of all products containing the pork ingredient.
2.       An apology to the Muslim community.
3.       Details of stock of the packaging showing the pork ingredient and quarantine of same for destruction.
4.       Details of the use of pork on this and other products.
5.       Details of the production in terms of quantity produced and current stocks.
6.       Details of outlets supplied with items containing the pork ingredients.
7.       Details of your Halaal certification.

All our rights are reserved in this matter. However, we hope that this matter can be resolved quickly and amicably without resorting to other options.

We request your urgent response by close of business on 6/8/2012.

Yours faithfully
