A mother?s emotional state can influence the health of the unborn child. If she is stressed, so is the child. The mother to be should therefore observe these guidelines:
  • Maintain a good environment according to the spirit of Islam.
  • Reduce stress as far as possible.
  • Eat and drink correctly in terms of nutrition and Halaal.
  • Exercise and rest appropriately.
  • Exercise care in choice of medication
Morning sickness
This is one of most common physical maladies suffered during pregnancy. The nausea and vomiting which can last beyond the morning can be minimised with natural treatment. Moderate inhalation of certain oils can offer relief. Use 2 drops of ginger oil, 4 of lemon, grapefruit and 3 of spearmint or 1 of peppermint oil. A drop each of rose otto, cardamom, coriander and lemon can be applied to a tissue and inhaled. Or add a slice of fresh ginger and lemon juice to hot water and sip.  

Fluid Retention

This common ailment experienced during pregnancy results in swollen ankles, feet, legs and/or hands. Avoid aggravations such as prolonged standing or sitting, inappropriate salt and sugar intake and caffeine. The following blend may be used to massage: 2 drops each of? geranium, lavender and lemon essential oils. Apply sparingly in the direction of the heart to assist with lymphatic drainage.

Constipation
Constipation occurs in pregnancy due to relaxation of intestine muscles. In addition, the iron and calcium supplements which are often prescribed during pregnancy may worsen the constipation. The pregnant woman should increase water and fibre intake and maintain an exercise regimen. The following blend of essential oils may also assist. 20 ml sweet almond, 10 ml apricot kernel, 2 drops Roman chamomile, 4 drops sweet orange, 1 drop rose otto and 2 drops patchouli. Apply sparingly to the abdomen in a gentle clockwise direction, as well as over the lower back.

Backache     
The following blend to be used in a regular aromatherapy massage can be used throughout pregnancy except during active labour, which requires a different formula:
  • 30ml sweet almond vegetal oil.
  • 10ml avaocado vegetal oil.
  • 10ml cherry or apricot vegetal oil.
  • 4 drops lavender essential oil.
  • 5 drops pettigrain essential oil.
  • 4 drops tangerine essential oil.
  • 2 drops lemon essential oil.
