عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ ، أَنّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، مَرَّ عَلَى صُبْرَةِ طَعَامٍ فَأَدْخَلَ يَدَهُ فِيهَا ، فَنَالَتْ أَصَابِعُهُ بَلَلًا ، فَقَالَ : " مَا هَذَا يَا صَاحِبَ الطَّعَامِ ؟ " ، قَالَ : أَصَابَتْهُ السَّمَاءُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ، قَالَ : " أَفَلَا جَعَلْتَهُ فَوْقَ الطَّعَامِ كَيْ يَرَاهُ النَّاسُ ، مَنْ غَشَّ ، فَلَيْسَ مِنِّي "

Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates:

Allah’s Messenger, salutations and peace be upon him, passed by a pile of [dry] food [in the market]. He inserted his hand in it and his fingers reached moisture. He asked, “What is this, O food seller?” He replied, “Rain fell upon it, O Allah’s Messenger.”

He responded, “Why did you not place it above the other food so that people could see it? He who deceives is not of me.” [Muslim]


The world is currently experiencing a plethora of food fraud, whether it be pork and kangaroo relabelled or olive oil diluted with cheaper oils such as sunflower oil. Honey, which is recommended in the Quraan and Hadith, and has numerous health benefits (e.g read) has not been spared from this fraud. Some suppliers dilute their honey with starch, others are so unscrupulous they pass off what is basically golden syrup as “honey.” In the interests of assisting the consumer in avoiding being deceived, we produce below some guidelines in identifying fake honey.

  1. Honey crystallises. If after a period, especially if placed in a refrigerator, the product does not crystallise, it is not pure honey.
  2. If the label states high-fructose corn syrup or glucose, it is not 100% honey.
  3. Mix honey and water and add a few drops of vinegar. If foam erupts, it might have had gypsum added to the honey.
  4. Pure honey will not easily dissolve in cool water, unlike fake honeys. It should settle when poured into water, not dissolve.
  5. Light the honey with a match. It should burn due to the sugar content. If water was added it will not burn.
  6. Honey has a high viscosity. It will remain intact or drip slowly from a spoon. Fake honey is thinner and will drip or flow faster. If you turn the container upside down, real honey will take longer to start dripping and will flow longer. The fake drips quicker and for a shorter while.
  7. A piece of stale bread will remain hard even 10 minutes after immersed in honey. If water was added, it will become soggy instead.
  8. Add iodine to honey water. It will turn blue if starch was added to the honey.
  9. Shake a closed container of honey water vigorously until it foams. The foam from real honey water has fine bubbles and remains for a while. The foam from fakes will be less solid and disappears quickly.
  10. Taste your honey. If you can taste things like flowers or herbs it’s real honey. Fake honey is just sweet, with a smidgen of “honey-like” flavour.
