Celery, a vegetable used since ancient times, is also an important medicinal herb. It has moist and cooling properties, thus making it a good balance for hot and spicy dishes. The whole plant is nourishing and restorative for weak conditions.
 
Consisting of volatile oils, glycosides and flavonoids, celery is an anti-rheumatic, a sedative and an antiseptic. It increases uric acid excretions, reduces blood pressure and is a possible anti-fungal agent.

Seeds
Used as a diuretic. Clears toxins and is thus beneficial for gout and rheumatoid arthritis sufferers. It is also used for irregular menstrual cycles. Combine 2 teaspoons of celery seed with 1 teaspoon of lignum vitae in a cup of boiling water.

Essential Oil
Distilled from the seeds, the essential oil is more potent. Use carefully. Add 15 drops to a bowl of warm water and soak gout afflicted feet. For arthritic joints, massage 5-10 drops diluted in 20mℓ almond or sunflower oil.

Root
Used for urinary stones and gravel and as a component in arthritic remedies. Used in tincture form.

Stalk

Has the same medicinal properties as the other parts of the celery, but to a lesser extent. The stalk promotes bone density and bone health in general. Eating fresh stalks stimulates milk after birth. “Negative calories” is a myth some believe that eating celery stalks uses more calories than what is consumed. Although the calorie intake is small, it is not negative.
 
Caution!
  • Bergapten in the seeds could increase photosensitivity. Do not apply the oil externally in bright sunlight.
  • Celery oil and large doses of seeds should be avoided during pregnancy. They stimulate the uterus.
  • Seeds intended for cultivation are often treated with fungicide and should not be consumed.
