Alzheimer's Disease & Your Diet

Alzheimer's is an incurable dementia often characterised by increasing confusion, memory loss, apathy and deep depression. Mental function deteriorates and eventually leads to death. It usually begins after 60, with a higher risk with increased age.  
Brain Changes
The effects are a result of nerve cells dying in those parts of the brain that control thought, memory and language. Animal studies have shown reduction in chemicals which transmit messages between nerve cells in the brain. Thus mental processes such as thinking and memorising are compromised.

Possible Causes
Although causes are not fully understood, the risk factors have been observed to be similar to those of atherosclerosis and heart disease. It is therefore possible that free radicals and inflammation might cause brain damage. Thus antioxidants might offer protection and vitamin E might slow down the disease.

Recent studies indicate that omega-3 fatty acids from fish oil, which reduce inflammation, help reduce risk.

Homocysteine, a toxic amino acid has also been identified as a risk factor. It can reduced by consumption of folic acid (in nuts and green leafy vegetables), Vitamin B6 (in oats, bran and bananas) Vitamin B12 (in animals such as fish).

Eat Plenty of:
Potatoes, spinach, offal, soya beans, green leafy vegetables and oily fish.

Allah has forbidden alcohol unto us, and it may contribute to Alzheimer's.  
Islam associates mental alacrity with good deeds. Specifically, Miswaak and the recitation of Quraan and Hadith are noted to assist the sharpness of the mind.
