New Research Paper Indicates Health Benefits of Ramadaan Type Fasting Print

Seven researchers from various departments of Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, Texas have published a paper indicating various health benefits of a Ramadaan type fasting (dawn to sunset for 30 days). The paper has been published on 15 April 2020 in the Journal of Proteomics.

The Qurʾān is clear that the primary reason for fasting is to learn Taqwā (awareness and fear of God) [al-Baqarah: 183]. Any further benefits, be it sympathy for the poor, increased charity, community unity, improved health etc are secondary to the primary goal. Our Creator knows our bodies best and He knows the real extent of health benefits which fasting may entail. Whatever He decrees is correct, whether we understand it or not.

The paper states,

Intermittent fasting from dawn to sunset for 30 consecutive days is associated with anticancer proteomic signature and upregulates key regulatory proteins of glucose and lipid metabolism, circadian clock, DNA repair, cytoskeleton remodeling, immune system and cognitive function in healthy subjects

SANHA has also highlighted over the years the importance of verification before publication. Unfounded news related to our faith is constantly spread, causing great harm. The distributors of such news may be innocent people who have failed in their duty of verification, or indeed they may be intentional mischief mongers. Key features of non-existent “studies” are that they are generally missing names, places, dates and most importantly, verifiable references. The paper we have quoted can be verified here .
