Selling Prohibited Items Print

We thank Allāh for increasing awareness amongst Muslims in regards the consumption of Halaal (the permitted) and the abstention from Haraam (the impermissible). Some Muslims however seem to be unaware that earnings should also be acquired within the parameters of Islāmic law and specifically, that that which a Muslim may not consume, may not be traded in as well, e.g. Haraam meat, liquor etc. We ask Allāh to guide us and take this opportunity to advise our brothers and sisters in regards this important facet of our religion.

Sustaining oneself through the prohibited has serious ramifications.
Allāh’s Messenger (salutations and peace be upon him) said, “That body which has been nourished by the prohibited (Haraam) will not enter Paradise.”

The following narration lists various sources of the prohibited and distinguishes between prohibited food and nourishment that is prohibited, which indicate the requirement that not only does food have to be Halaal, but earnings should be Halaal as well:

Allāh’s Messenger (salutations and peace be upon him) said, “Allāh Most High is pure and accepts nothing but pure. Indeed, Allāh has commanded the believers with what he commanded the Messengers. The Most High says, ‘O Messengers, eat of the pure things and do good deeds.’ [al-Muʾminūn: 51]. And the Most High says, ‘O you who believe, eat of the pure things which We have provided you with’” [al-Baqarah: 172] Allāh’s Messenger (salutations and peace be upon him) then mentioned a man on a lengthy journey, dishevelled, dusty, stretching his hands to the sky, calling, “O my Lord! O my Lord.” However, his food is from the prohibited, his clothing is from the prohibited and he is nourished from the prohibited, how then can he be answered? [Muslim]

Amongst the important points of this narration is that nourishing oneself with the prohibited not only has consequences in the hereafter, but one cuts oneself from the Creator and Provider in this world already. What an utter calamity that is!

The blessed tongue of Allāh’s Messenger (salutations and peace be upon him) explicitly forbade trade in items which are prohibited (for consumption or otherwise). He said:

“When Allāh prohibits the eating of something upon a people, He prohibits its earnings upon them as well.” [Abū Dāwūd]

It is worth noting that that in compiling the above Ḥadīth and those related to it, Abū Dawūd (Allāh’s mercy be upon him) deemed it noteworthy to compose a separate chapter heading to highlight and clarify the message, “Chapter on the earnings from intoxicants and carrion.”

While the prohibition against earning from the prohibited is general, the sale of Haraam meat (carrion), which regrettably some Muslims engage in, receives specific mention in the Ḥadīth:

“Verily Allāh and His Messenger have prohibited the sale of wine, carrion, swine and idols.” [Muslim]

Muslims should reflect that Haraam meat has been mentioned alongside wine, pork and idols. Can we ever approach any of these, whether to use, consume or sell?

This world is an abode of tests and every atom is under the command of Allāh. He will not prohibit us from something without creating alternate options for our provision. May He guide us all to refrain from all that is impure, turn to Him in repentance and adopt that which pleases Him.
